The manner in which AI is transforming the essence of search

We progressed from Archie and W3Catalog simple keyword-based search mechanism to WebCrawler’s web indexing and full-text search capabilities, and finally to Yahoo! Then came Google (formerly known as BackRub), and PageRank instantly transformed the search industry. The revenue cow of Alphabet’s farm, search engine optimisation and marketing, experienced a meteoric rise during our observation. Social search has experienced a surge in prominence over the past decade, primarily on social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram. While that is still establishing itself, AI-powered search has already initiated the next revolution in search.

Prior to November 2022, when OpenAI’s ChatGPT, a large language model (LLM) chatbot, was released, Pattern Identifying AI (PAI) models were predominantly found in applications (consider software used for fraud detection, anomaly detection, and recommendation engines).

Differentiating AI-Powered Search from Keyword Search

We introduced Generative AI (GenAI), a game-changing AI, with ChatGPT; this is an entirely new beast! LLMs are capable of generating novel content on the basis of the enormous amounts of text data that they are trained on. And this entirely transforms Search, particularly in the following ways:

1) Search powered by AI promotes inclusivity: Search Using Methods Other Than Words

Our pursuit for the better has been aided in this regard by our inquiry. Search is becoming significantly more accessible to individuals with disabilities as a result of AI. By integrating AI with speech recognition and text-to-speech technologies, it becomes feasible to identify images and locate content in various languages. This ultimately enables the utilisation of search engines that operate via voice, sound, image, or multiple languages.

By conducting cross-cultural investigations, we gain a greater understanding of local contexts without the added difficulty of interpreting languages. This facilitates information sharing and collaboration and reduces biases in our research and comprehension of the world.

2) Search Powered by AI Requires Less Time: Utilise Natural Language Processing

Consider the case presented at Google’s keynote address earlier this year. When was the last time that you organised a vacation? Following your search for destinations with inexpensive flights, you proceeded to locate locations with ideal weather conditions for the anticipated vacation periods. Currently, you must locate a location that is both popular enough to accommodate activities involving children and not so popular that the beach becomes unmanageable and you are unable to catch a tan. You then set a price alert for the flights and the accommodation to conclude your day’s research, after which you looked for affordable accommodations on Airbnb or hotels. After spending the next few weeks being inundated with retargeting advertisements at every turn, you will ultimately decide to book everything at the eleventh hour due to the considerable amount of time spent conducting research.

GenAI would have significantly shortened that search by generating a search query that synthesises all necessary parameters in a natural language format. Consider the following: “What are some pleasant options for a week-long July vacation that are suitable for children and feature a less congested beach?”The main differentiation lies in the fact that in the past, we obtained pertinent information by conducting keyword searches.”  However, with GenAI, we search multiple natural-sounding phrases as opposed to a series of brief searches, as the AI is capable of decomposing our query into smaller tasks. This enables us to obtain an efficient result in a significantly shorter search journey.

3) Search Powered by AI Remembers: Contextual and Historical Searching Information

We are fully cognizant of the adaptability that cookies afford us. By employing artificial intelligence, search engines can utilise demographic data such as language, location, and previous search history as fragments to comprehend the more profound context of user queries. In conjunction with the capabilities of GenAI, search results are now being tailored to your preferred mode of communication, be it language or content type (e.g., reels, images, or blogs).

An enormous proportion of AI’s extraordinary power can be ascribed to the self-learning mechanisms, such as machine learning algorithms, that it frequently implements. The similarity between machine learning and the way in which our brains remember to use previously preferred options to construct pathways is not entirely surprising; machine learning, in fact, is a neural network that draws inspiration from our favourite computer, the brain. This implies that search powered by AI can also anticipate your requirements and predict your next move, not only returning a more expedient result but also presenting you with information that may be pertinent to your inquiry but which you may not have considered searching for.

Search Powered by AI Can Distinguish: Fact-Checking and Misinformation Reduction in Search Results

This is the juncture where our more established, well-known forms of AI, such as PAI, converge with GenAI to discern which search results originate from authentic sources of information and which are generated by artificial intelligence. This enables us to reduce the dissemination of misinformation and crawl and verify the veracity of fraudulent content. Search capabilities that will contribute to a better world include the identification of cyberbullying, detection of dubious, substandard websites, and barring of bot-generated social profiles.

Will search powered by AI supplant traditional search?

It is still quite some time before we begin to place the same level of trust in information generated and compiled by AI as we do in standard search queries. However, it is indisputable that it is already making significant strides towards revolutionising the search experience. Indeed, AI will cease to be a mere bystander in academia, policy formulation, and research in the near future, as it consumes and processes daily voluminous quantities of data. In addition to establishing security standards and safeguarding user privacy, this potential extends to the development of ethical frameworks for search engines. AI may not only be positively transforming the search landscape, but it may also be positively revolutionising search itself.

According to a study by ServiceNow and Pearson, the rise of AI will generate an additional 4.7 million tech employment in India by 2027. Therefore, now is the time to construct a future-proof career by acquiring AI and ML courses and reskilling. In India, there is an explosion of AI and ML courses designed to educate professionals. Setting objectives and ensuring that the curriculum of particular AI and ML courses online corresponds with those objectives are necessary when deciding which course to enrol in from a variety of options. Trending AI and ML courses assist professionals in gaining practical insights into the most recent developments by instructing them in fundamental concepts and applicable tool usage.
